Viva Cristo Rey! / Long Live Christ the King! In the 1920s the government, was rebelling against the Catholic church in Mexico. The Mexican constitution of 1917 (aka Calle Laws) was enforced by eliminating all the power that the Catholic Church had. Many Priests and innocent people were killed during the war. Since there were countless amounts of people that died defending their faith, lots of saints and martyrs came out of this war. Just how Lindner tried to interfere with the Younger family so they wouldn’t move into the white neighborhood the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) wanted to take part in the war because they were against the Catholic faith. Martyrs and Saints During this time people gave up their lives for the Catholic faith. Some of them have been canonized and others have beatified. One saint that was recently canonized on October 16 of last year is Saint Jose Sanchez del Rio. He was fourteen years old when he died. He was caught by the federalists and locked up in a church that was used as a prison. He was tortured and asked to renounce to his faith, but he refused to. The soles of his feet were sliced and he was made to walk on salt. The soldiers were getting so frustrated and angry at him that they started stabbing him. He was also struck with a machete, with every strike that he took he screamed Viva Cristo Rey. St. jose Maria Robles Hurtado suggested to put a cross in the center of mexico, because it was a violation of the constitution he was hanged by his own friend. He was only able to place a cornerstone and make a ceremony for it before he got killed. Where the corner stone is located now there is a shrine called Cristo Rey and it is on El Cerro del Cubilete in Guanajuato, Mà ©xico.
